Where can I in the US buy a diesel for my plane and fly it now?

The question comes more and more often in our email from US aircraft owners and pilots. Lets give a specific answer:
Right now: You can buy a new DA 42 twin Thielert engines. You can buy a Cessna 172 converted to Thielert 135HP if you are a flight academy with an A/P who will undergo basic training. You can buy a used Cessna 182P or later models and have it converted to SMA 230HP by FlyJetA in Florida, Tule River Aero in California or Nu-Tech Associates in Quebec. You can place an order for a new Maule MX9 with SMA. All these are now certified or STCd by FAA. For experimentals you can also purchase a DeltaHawk 2-stroke 160HP and install it in any experimental that they will approve.
What is coming next: As OEM, we expect it will be first the DA 40 single engine with Thielert. Then, the 172 Thielert should become available around flight academies willing to service them because they have a fleet of them. As conversions, the Piper Cherokee with Thielert and the Piper Dakota with SMA are flying now and should be STCd next. By 2008 we expect that the Cessna 206 and at least one Cessna twin will be available and STC'd with the Thielert V8. The Beech Duke Thielert V8 is flying in Germany and seems a great success but flying it in the US can only be as experimental. Later we are waiting for news from Wilksch Airmotive in the UK announcing that their two-stroke 100-120HP is available for the Thorp T-211 and perhaps... for the Cessna 150-152.

The EAA Fly In at Dinwiddie Airfield (VA) was a success for diesels.

Organized by the Virginia EAA Chapter on September 30-October 1st, this was one of the most important regional EAA Fly-Ins, with a very strong exhibition of LSA manufacturers, including the Thorpe T-211 now manufactured by IndusAir. Surprise: the sales representative could not give us news of the T-211 WAM aero diesel project. As our readers know, a demonstrator is flying in the UK with the Wilsch Airmotive WAM 120HP 2-stroke. The SMA Service Center for the Eastern US FlyJetA, Inc. in Sarasota FL was represented by Patrick Canivet, CEO and Bob Ohlinger, Engineer and Chief Pilot, while SMA was represented by Thierry Saint Loup, Sr. Field Support Engineer. One of their two demo 182s was available for demonstration and attracted a high curiosity since it is now STCd in the US as well as worldwide. Tule River Aero is the SMA service center West of the Mississippi; there is one service center in Quebec, and one in Mexico. Others are coming on board. Andre Teissier-duCros gave for the 5th and 6th time his presentation on the coming of Aerodiesels to the General aviation market, and gathered an audience of some 40 professionals and pilots. You can order this PowerPoint Presentation CDrom (96 slides) and use it yourself to explain your colleagues and pilot friends why the coming of aerodiesel is unavoidable, including in the US, and has nothing much to do with the price or availability of aVgas. You can order it with any major credit card or with PayPal. Click here to get access to the Lulu direct order page. Or go to the DieselAir Store at http://www.lulu.com/content/336659 .

Mission Statement

Every month: news, facts, and comments on the coming revolution for piston-engines aircrafts between 130 and 400 HP: Retrofitting a diesel engine to run on Jetfuel or Kerosene, reduce Gallons/Hour by some 30%, eliminate ignition systems (magnetos, spark plugs) and their problems, eliminate mixture control, increase TBO to 2,400-3,000 hours, increase performance between 6,000 and 12,500 ft., and drastically reduce Operating Costs.

The letter is intended for piston engines aircraft owners, manufacturers, fleet operators and FBOs, re-manufacturers of engines for these aircrafts, manufacturers of engine components and ancillaries, and all professionals acting in decisions of engine exchange or refitting at TBO, in North and South America, Pacific Rim, African continent, and all parts of the world were Avgas, Mogas, Kerosene and Jetfuel are available.
